How I Learned to Love My Butane Camp Stove
My evolution continues. My old (antique, actually) Coleman kerosene camp stove lost the ability to be pumped to any pressure. I needed a replacement. I've been a fan of Coleman products for camping, so that's where I looked for a stove, and got a most pleasant surprise. For one thing - the price! It costs about half of what I paid for the old kerosene camp stove. And it has features I never expected in such an affordable stove.
This is a Camp Stove!
The Coleman Classic is similar to the Bistro Model but costs even less!
Match-free lighting, it can cook at full blast for over an hour on a single canister of butane. The little gas cylinders are just over half a pound and fit inside the stove so it's ready to cook when you want, without fiddling around. No pumping, heh! I love it!
More Features than the Coleman Classic
Sturdy and big enough for a 10" skillet. The temperature control knob works accurately - what a surprise. It has easy to clean porcelain smooth grid and a rustproof 7,650 BTU adjustable burner. With 2 lbs. worth of cartridges you can count on 5 hours of cooking time - or more, that's plenty for most weekend trips. I like easy. It's lightweight and dependable. Coleman is still doing a great job.

We aren't kids. Between my wife and I we have 141 years. As a kid it was normal to round up kindling and make a campfire out of whatever was handy. Preferably dead branches and sticks to get started and then adding larger chunks of wood. It was for cooking, sure, but also for warmth at night and an effort to keep some light and a gathering place for the camp. Also hoped it would keep bears, bobcats and other forest dwellers further away.
As a young adult I still loved to camp and as we raised our family, it was something we did nearly every weekend that we could. Things had changed and most of the places we could get to for a weekend either didn't permit open fires or there was not much wood laying around to collect for that.
I evolved. We bought Coleman's top of the line kerosene camper stove. You filled the tank from a gallon can, pumped up the pressure to the point where you could light it and then kept an eye on the flame so you could pump it up some more when the flames were weak. I got to like that better than the old wood fires, for cooking anyway. It gave me a place for my morning coffeepot and later for meals, it was pretty dependable to get it going when you wanted it and fold it up to take it home when you were done. It did nothing for the bears and skunks, but we weren't sleeping on open ground either.
If this isn't the camp stove for you, there are a lot more to choose from. This is not the right stove for large camping groups where you would want more than one burner. See the full selection of camping stoves at Amazon
